Another Year in the Life of a TLC

(Teacher-Librarian Consultant)

It has been a little slow getting up to speed here. September is always a frantic month, particularly as we work with new TLs and update our more seasoned ones. That, the planning and meetings, and the shock of returning to life in a cubicle after weeks of roaming Italy, despite attendant health issues, will account for a slow blog-start here.

Here's something to consider as we start a new year, from Nancy Z:

"Did You Know?" provides insights in preparation for the Media Convergence conference to be held next month in New York City.

I loved travelling with my new Dell Latitude 2100 netbook (with the touchscreen feature and added RAM) and noted with interest the SLJ / Jeff Hastings review of this tool for students in both classrooms and libraries. Our IT Division would be happy to consult on how to implement netbooks in your school library program.

We are getting ready for distribution of books to our grade 1s for Canadian Children's Book Week, this year being held November 14 to 21. The link provides information for ordering kits and more. The theme, Gold Medal Reading!, focuses on sports reading.

While creating your calendar for upcoming events for the 2009/10 school year, mark February 21-27 as Freedom to Read Week. I have already ordered the kits for all secondary schools.

Register now and here online for the BCTLA "Champions of Literacy" Conference at Richmond Secondary School, October 22 and 23. Come and bring a colleague to hear Roch Carrier and attend workshops of value to your collaborative program development. The Thursday evening social event is to be held at the new Olympic speedskating Oval. It is promising to be a fantastic conference all in all.

Other Important Dates? Why, yes! See You There!
  • VTLA AGM, October 1, Hamber
  • Secondary "Department Heads," October 5, Hamber
